Du Motion is proud to announce that we are running this years’s 5K charity race for kids with Down syndrome.
All the proceeds from the race, set to take place on April 29th as a part of the popular Du Motion event, will go towards the Association for Down syndrome of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
The association was founded in 2008 and currently has 30 children and young people. Younger ones are working with rehabilitators, while the older ones are participating in the day-to-day workshops within the economic activity launched three years ago. So far, much has been accomplished regarding public awareness and inclusion of children with Down syndrome in kindergartens and schools, but there are still barriers to entry into the labor market.
“Our goal is to make people realize our children want and can be equal members of this society if they are given the opportunity. With a lot of work and effort they can achieve great results, as it can be seen in the example of our Petra Vican,” said Sonja Majer of the Association for Down Syndrome of Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
15-yo Petra Vican, the daughter of the celebrated “Jug” water polo club member and the former goalkeeper of the Croatian national team Frane Vican, is the face of this year’s 5K campaign. Last year she won no.1 junior place in 200m crawl at the European Championship for people with Down syndrome. After a series of medals won in Croatia, this was her first big European contest, on which she showed that a bright sport future is ahead of her.
With a desire for more stories like this, Du Motion joins the campaign for raising awareness through its 5K race. With the funds collected through the race the Association intends to to collect some of the resources needed for rehabilitation and inclusion of children into new methods of work, parents’ education for working with children, and the purchase of necessary equipment.
You can also join the campaign by purchasing a supporters’ package with everything you need to cheer the runners on Stradun.
